What To Expect During Construction

Remodeling can be both exciting and disruptive as your home is transformed into a jobsite. Most of the time you have to live through it from start to finish. The novelty of having workers in your home can wear off quickly so here are few things to keep in mind:

Communication: Good communication with your contractor is the KEY to a successful project. Plan on speaking with your contractor almost daily. His or her primary goal is to keep you informed. If you are concerned about anything at all, please let him/ her know. It is in his/ her best interest to keep you satisfied!

Preconstruction Discussions: A preconstruction meeting is a good way to identify and discuss the issues that need to be addressed. Some topics that could be discussed are:

• Timing-What are the daily start and finish times?

• Debris-What is the debris removal procedure?

• Parking -Where will everyone park?

• Personal Belongings -Where will the furniture and the valuable items go? How will they be covered?

• Materials-Make all your selections as soon as possible to prevent delays.

• Change Orders- Changes that are made after the original contract is signed, will affect your job's budget and timing . Realize that all change orders need to be signed by you before work starts.

Construction in Process: This is the time when communication is most important!

• Please address any issues that arise concerning the following: Dust and dirt, employees, subcontractors, deliveries, daily clean-up, changes and change orders, and anything else that you find important!

Post Construction Review: At the end of your project you should review work and do the following:

• Make a list of any items that need to be fixed and/or addressed.

• Decide if you are satisfied with the final clean up.

• Go over the final bill if changes were made.

• Communicate with your contractor to let them know when you are truly happy so the project can be considered completed.
